Volunteer Needed to Take Minutes of 11/03 Meeting

Ray Campbell

Hi Lions:

Our thoughts and prayers need to be with our Secretary, Lion Betsy and her
family during this time. For those who haven't heard, Lion Betsy is going
through some pretty serious health challenges. Her daughter, DJ and family
have set up a Caring Bridge to help people keep track of what is happening.
The link to the caring bridge is:
https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/betsygrenevitch

I need a volunteer to agree to take minutes from the November 3, 2022 ACB
Lions meeting. I have the Zoom recording from John Ross and Lion Adam also
has a recording of the meeting. If you would be willing to help out with
this, please let me know. I don't know how long Lion Betsy will be unable
to be with us, so we may need someone to take minutes for our December
meeting as well.

Thanks in advance for agreeing to help. You can reply here or send me an
email at ray153056@....

Hi DJ,

I know your mom for a long time. I know her from the Guide dog foundation. I must  have missed something  because she seemed fine at the last Lion’s meeting. What happened? What is the web address for the caring bridge page?

Hello ACB Lions Family:

Just a quick message to say thank you all Veterans, including our
Visually Impaired Veterans of America friends, for your service to a
grateful nation. This past Tuesday, Election Day, many of us
exercised our right to vote and choose our Government, something you
all served for us to have the right to do. May you all have a
wonderful and blessed Veterans Day!

With immense gratitude,

Re: minutes with correction for October meeting

Betsy Grenevitch

thank you. I have been getting that wrong for a long time. I love it now that I have been taught how to spell out names on the member list of who is present.

Thank you for also using the word so I knew which letter because of my hearing loss. I know there is a way to phonetically spell the word with NVDA but can never remember how to use it. I will change it in the copy of my minutes. Thanks again for your kindness.

Reminder, Please, Please buy tickets for the ICB Concert Fundraiser

Ray Campbell

I would like to remind you all about the Illinois Council of the Blind's
(ICB) very exciting Fall Fundraiser.Steven Solomon "Pianist to the Stars".
This will be a virtual concert on Sunday, November 13 at 7 p.m. central
time!

Steven plays jazz, classical, pop, show tunes, oldies, patriotic, holiday,
and all genres of music. He is also a singer, singer-songwriter,
accompanist, arranger, music director, producer, music editor, studio
musician, educator, and multi-instrumentalist.

This will take place using Zoom on Sunday, November 13th, 7:00 PM until 8:30
PM Central Time. The cost is $25.00 per household to attend.

Folks, we have a shamefully small number of tickets sold thus far. It would
be a travesty to bring such a renowned talent in to help ICB raise funds
with the pitifully small number of tickets we have sold. Please, please
purchase tickets for this fundraiser. Please, also, forward the information
to your families and friends. $25 is a small price to pay per household for
such a great talent.

Some of you may remember we promoted this fundraiser fall of 2021 and
sold tickets when we had Steven Solomon perform a virtual concert. It was a
successful fundraiser last year and we are hoping this year it will be as
well. Please join us for a good time and great music.

You can buy a ticket to attend by going to the ICB website
www.icbonline.org/concert-registration, you can call the ICB Office at
217-523-4967, or, if you have Pay Pal, send $25 to icb@... and
indicate in the comments you want a concert ticket. The last 30 minutes of
the show will be dedicated to songs that have been requested for Steven to
play. These songs have been pre-requested. Steven can play any genre. All
you need to do to pre-request a song is email Maggie at the ICB office at
icb@... or call her at 217-523-4967. She will then send you a list
of songs to choose from to make your selection for Steven to play.

For more information about Steven Solomon, the amazing places around the
world that he has performed, the famous people he has performed for and some
of his music, check out his website, www.PianoBySteven.com or check out his
YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/pianobysteven. We hope that you can join
us in our fundraising efforts as ICB could really use the support. Have a
wonderful fall season.

William Jess Benjamin – William, 74, died October 25, 2022 at home in Tallahassee, FL, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia.   Born May 29, 1948 in Kansas City, KS to George Stillman Benjamin and Marjorie Stockman Benjamin, he was the 5th of their 7 beloved children.  After losing his sight to hereditary Retinitis Pigmentosa at a young age, his family moved to CA in order for him to receive a better education relative to his vision.  He went on to study at the Emile Fries Piano Hospital and Training Center in Vancouver, WA where he became a piano tuner as well as a teacher of piano tuning at the school.  He attended many conventions for the blind all over the country.  It was at the American Council of the Blind Convention in Orlando, FL that he met Sally Ann McEwan, whom he wed July 12, 2002 and relocated to Tallahassee later that year.  He owned and operated several sales, repair and tuning stores of pianos through the years.  His most recent being Piano Boutique in Tallahassee.  A few of the professional groups William tuned for were Journey, The Eagles, Tammy Wynette, Crystal Gayle, The Pointer Sisters and Merle Haggard.  William would call people with vision, “sightlings”. He performed many “sightling” jobs including digging up, leveling and relaying the brick patio, assisted in taking care of the pool, raked and burned leaves and limbs, building a tree house complete with stairs, railing and dumb waiter.  William was a member of Tallahassee Heights United Methodist Church,  the Piano Technicians Guild and past president of the Lions Club of Tallahassee and American Council of the Blind Alliance.  He and Sally became residents at Cherry Laurel Retirement Community in February 2019.  He always had a joke and a story; a favorite was why God invented perfume, so even a blind man could enjoy a pretty lady.  Travel was a big part of William’s life – the conventions for the blind, cruises, camping and then RV trips with family.   Many thanks go to the many friends and family that have supported he and Sally during his illness.  William is survived by his wife Sally Ann McEwan Benjamin, two brothers -  Leo George Benjamin (Betty Jo), Harrodsburg, KY, Kenneth “Ken” Jay Benjamin (Rose), Stockton, CA, a sister Violet Bernice Prendergast (John), Pueblo, CO, sisters-in-law Sylvia Gregory Kelley, Shirley McEwan Moore (DeVoe), all of Tallahassee, and many extended family.  He is pre-deceased by his parents, his daughter, Angela “Angel” Benjamin, two brothers, Joseph “Joe” S Benjamin, Walter Benjamin, a sister Shirley Benjamin, his parents-in-law Wilbur J and Louie Dell Copeland McEwan and sister-in-law Sharon McEwan Palmer.

Visitation will be Monday, October 31, 2022 at 10:30am followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00am at THUMC, 3004 Mahan Drive, Tallahassee, FL.  Interment will be at 1:00pm in Oakland Cemetery, N Bronough St, Tallahassee, FL.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to FL Council of the Blind, Lions Club of Tallahassee, THUMC or a charity of your choice.

  Beggs Funeral Homes.
