ACBL Open Board Meeting via Conference Call

October 6, 2016

The ACBL open board meeting via conference call was called to order on
Thursday, October 6, 2016, by Lion President Carla Ruschival at 8:00
p.m.CST. Those in attendance were: William Benjamin, Sally Benjamin,
Margaret Johnson, Adam Ruschival, Carla Ruschival, Elaine Weisbard,
LouAnn Williams, Joan Cox, Grady Ebert, Karen Eitel, Marlaina Lieberg,
Mitch Pomerantz, Donna Pomerantz, and Larry Skwarok.

The minutes were approved as presented.

Lion Adam reported receipt of an ACBL refund from the national office
of $399.09, making a current balance in the ACBL treasury of
$8,649.09. The treasurer's report was accepted as presented.

Lion President Carla suggested that further discussion of the annual
Millie's Place event be postponed until more information is available.

After some discussion of what has been referred to as the ACBL Open
Board Meeting via Conference Call, a decision was made to refer to
this meeting in the future as the Monthly Open Meeting of the American
Council of Blind Lions via Conference Call.

Lion President Carla asked the lions on the conference call to discuss
the position of Program Chairman in local Lions Clubs and to describe
some interesting programs experienced by the clubs. In some clubs the
Program Chairman is a one-year appointment, and in others the Program
Chairman serves for one month.

A motion was made and seconded that ACBL be a $2,000.00 coral sponsor
for scholarship support unless additional funds become available for a
$3,000.00 Topaz sponsorship. The motion carried. Lion Adam suggested
that a letter be sent out to the ACBL membership stating that the
month of March be designated as the ACBL month for working with
individual clubs to solicit donations toward this goal.

Lion Marlaina brought up the subject of blind and visually impaired
Lions accessing training materials from LCIF over the internet in PDF
format and in graphics. This topic will be discussed further at next
month's ACBL meeting via conference call.

Lion President Carla suggested that there be a discussion at next
month's meeting concerning ways for blind and visually impaired Lions
to be better included in Lions Club activities.

The next open meeting of American Council of Blind Lions via
conference call will be November 3, 2016 at the usual time.

Realizing no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Lion Margaret Johnson, Secretary

ACB Lions will hold its December conference call tomorrow, December 1, at 9:00 PM Eastern (6:00 PM Pacific) on the phone number 712-432-3900; the code is 796096.

We have already received lunch prices from Janet, so we will spend a little time looking ahead to Reno.

For our discussion time this month, please come with ideas on how we can involve more blind Lions, both inside and outside of ACB, in ACB Lions. Keep in mind that we send out a membership letter in late January-early February, which serves as a recruitment tool. What are some other ways that we each can be involved in bringing at least one person into ACB Lions between now and March 1?

Hope to talk with all of you tomorrow evening.

September meeting minutes

Carla Ruschival

ACBL Open Board Meeting via Conference Call

September 1, 2016

The ACBL open board meeting via conference call was called to order on
Thursday, September 1, by Lion President Carla Ruschival at 8:00 p.m.
CST. Those in attendance were: William Benjamin, Sally Benjamin,
Margaret Johnson, Adam Ruschival, Carla Ruschival, Elaine
Weisbard,Joan Cox, Grady Ebert, Karen Eitel, Jack Lenk, June Lenk,
Mitch Pomerantz, Donna Pomerantz, Ray Campbell, Karyn Campbell, Larry
Skwarok, Teresa Christian, and Pat Wallace.

The minutes were approved as presented.

Lion Adam reported the bank balance as of the end of August to be
$8,250.00. This amount included a receipt of $150.00 for a life
membership. Lion President Carla reported that ACBL will soon be
receiving a $399.09 refund from ACB for ACBL activities at the
conference and convention. The treasurer's report was accepted as
presented.

There was a motion made and seconded that, if at all possible, the
ACBL luncheon and business meeting be scheduled for Wednesday during
next year's ACB conference and convention and that a local Lions Club
be invited to attend.

A decision was made to use the June ACBL open board meeting via
conference call to take care of business usually conducted on Sunday
morning at the ACB conference and convention.

There was not enough scheduling information to make plans for the ACBL
Millie's Place activity.

Lion President Carla noted that the price of the Topaz sponsorship for
the 2017 ACB conference and convention will be $3,000.00. Lion Adam
was asked to look at the ACBL finances before the October meeting and
to provide information on the level of sponsorship that is best for
ACBL.

The guest on the conference call for September was Lion Dick Hefner,
President of the Paragould, Arkansas, Lions Club, where Lion Margaret
Johnson has been a member for 12 years. In addition to describing the
projects of the club, Lion Dick noted that he thought it was a good
idea to have visually impaired people in Lions Clubs so that everyone
could be aware of the happenings in the blind community.

Lion President Carla asked other lions on the conference call to give
examples of times when they helped with projects in their local Lions
Clubs.

The next open board meeting via conference call will be October 6,
2016, at the usual time.

Realizing no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Dear ACB Supporter,

People tell me I’m the exception. I guess they’re just not used to seeing a successful woman with her own business, especially if that woman is blind.

I am flattered; I won’t lie. But I’m also bothered by the reality that so many talented, dedicated people are left behind just because they are blind. These are people who are longing to work and contribute, to share their skills and ideas. It’s a shame. And we all lose out. The issues we’re facing in our country and our world require the problem-solving skills and talents of everyone.

That’s why I’m proud to be with the American Council of the Blind. ACB helped me get where I am today. I made valuable connections that led to my first audio description gig, voicing content for the Washington Monument — and other jobs, as well. (Audio description is the technique by which visual elements are made verbal.) I joined the ACB Audio Description Committee. I know how important it is for people who are blind to have access to the same information the rest of the world enjoys. It’s vital.

But you know, the seeds of success start in childhood. I was luckier than most. I went to a public school and although I was often the only blind student in my class, I had the support of wonderful, knowledgeable teachers of the visually impaired. They spent time with me, one-on-one, every week, teaching me safe mobility using a white cane. I learned braille. They showed me adaptive technologies, and all the extra things a person who is blind needs to know to live competently in a world that’s designed for sighted people.

I was lucky to have a solid, supportive family, and a home life that was not in disarray. And because I had “a village” — teachers, family, and friends — rooting for me every step of the way, I learned to believe in my abilities.

But not everyone is that lucky. And that’s why ACB is so very important. Our world is becoming increasingly dependent on pictures, graphics, and videos — especially in school curriculums. We can’t afford to leave students with visual impairments behind.

ACB opened doors for me. And I am paying it forward by hiring other people who are blind or visually impaired. I am rooting for others who want to learn to believe in themselves and their capabilities — who want to make their dreams a reality.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to live to their fullest potential. If we want to have a society of productive, participating adults, then we need to act now. By supporting the American Council of the Blind, you are investing in a brighter future. With you rooting for us, we can bridge the gap and break down the barriers. Through advocacy, legislation, mentorship, and leadership, we will change the world. Please join us by giving generously at http://acb.donorpages.com/GivingTuesday2016/.

Sincerely,

Satauna Howery, Voice Over professional

Re: November ACBL meeting

June Lenk

Hi ACB Lions and Lion President, Carla. Lion Jack and I will be unable to participate on the call Thursday. He has yet another Governor's visit and I will accompany him as First Lady of the District. Some of our fall projects include gathering and distributing food to local pantries in our community and preparing a Thanksgiving meal for one of the high school football teams. Lion Jack and I send our best wishes for a wonderful Thanks Giving holiday to everyone. Lion June Lenk, Immediate Past President, ACB Lions
