mental status exams
Brooke Jostad
Hi all,
Do you disclose anything about your lack of ability to report physical appearance of a client in a mental status exam, and lack of ability to note eye contact and some motor functioning? Thanks for your thoughts, Brooke |

As a matter of fact, I don’t report that at all. I think that in general, our powers of observation other than being able to see our clients, are very good. Also, if I do have a question about something I will usually ask a colleague to come in and just say hello and give me a opinion. Be well, Annie pleas excuse the typos I’m using dictation Author and Consultant www.annchiappetta.com. I just want to chime in here and say that I appreciate your feedback on this topic, and as we are discussing mental status examination‘s in my social work and mental health course right now. I too was wondering how to deal with visual indicators. I appreciate the suggestion to gain feedback from a cited colleague. One thought that I have is that could even be someone at the front desk as they check the clients in or out. We could approach the front desk personnel after the client has left the facility in order to inquire about any visual indicators of which we may not be aware.

Great suggestion. I also will sometimes ask, "What are you wearing today?" once the person answers, I will know if I need to get some sighted input. Smells also can help. -----Original Message-----
